Hi. I'm Kelly Chilton.
I'm here to write beautifully for you.
I believe that adding beauty to the world enriches us all.
I believe in the power of words and I love my job.
I earned a B.A. in Graphic Design at North Carolina State University (go Wolfpack!) and worked for years as an art director and graphic designer in magazines (O, The Oprah Magazine, Bon Appetit, blue, among others).
I have an eye for typography and layout an understanding of print processes. When I started doing calligraphy to music lyrics about eight years ago I switched to working by hand and never looked back — but the layout and computer skills do still come in handy. I specialize in pointed pen scripts. I also love watercolor and encaustic painting and abstract and figural drawings with graphite.
When I'm not in the studio, you can find me outdoors in southern California with my two kids. I row crew, garden, cook, sail, scuba dive, and go to music shows.
Calligraphy hands that I've spent a good deal of time developing include:
Modern Pointed Pen
Gothic- Blackletter and Fraktur
I'm an active member of local and international calligraphy associations, Society for Calligraphy and IAMPETH. I continue to study under top calligraphers in their areas of specialty and attend national and international calligraphy conferences. I am a contributor to a fantastic online resource, calligrafile.com.
If you are interested in learning calligraphy, I highly recommend checking out all three of these organizations to get started — as well as your local calligraphy guild — for classes and resources. (Spoiler alert: Calligrafile has links to your local calligraphy guild!) Here are their links as well as some reputable places online where you can get calligraphy supplies:
